Lock ring spacer

It's my first time at installing a cassette - a Shimano 105 (CS-5700). It's brand new out of the box.

To my inexperienced eye, the diameter of the lock ring spacer looks too big and is protruding above the bottom of the teeth on the smallest sprocket.

Is this the way the spacer should be?

The spacer goes behind the cassette, not behind the lockring.

There is no spacer. The lock ring butts up against the serrations on the smallest sprocket. Methinks that you are using the spacer that goes behind the cassette. Variuos versions of this but roughly, a 10 speed cassette on an 11 speed hub has spacer. However on non Shimano hubs this may or may not be the case. Either way, it's in the wrong place. Try without, if the cassetterattles try with.

I had a couple of 105 11-28 cassettes with Mouton, but now on Ultegra 12-30.
Ultegra uses a spacer just like the 105.

It's been there with my 105 and Ultegra cassettes, but they don't last long as they peel away and shred. They'll only stand a couple of removals, and then that's it. Make sure you wear gloves because they are sharp!

With them gone, it makes no difference to anything other than you don't have to be aware of a sharp and shredded shim.

On mine I rarely bother with it after first removal

Given it's size, should I leave it off?

Yes, I agree that is a little confusing. The ‘lock ring spacer’ in that diagram is the same as item 2 in Mick F’s. It is slightly thicker than tin foil and may already be on the lock ring thread. The 1mm thick one in your first photo goes on the freehub before any of the sprockets. It’s required because you’ll probably find that without it the lock ring will bottom out on its thread before it has tightened up against the sprockets.
