Replacing PF30 BB on 2013 Boardman Carbon Road
Replacing PF30 BB on 2013 Boardman Carbon Road
Hi
My Boardman Carbon road bike is now 8 years old and Ive noticed the PF30 BB (original) has a slight constant noise whilst rotating compared to the silent wheel bearings. The noise is "smooth" and not gritty like you get with worn/corroded bearings and there is no discernible rocking or looseness in the BB.
However there is more resistance to rotation that I imagine there should be in that if I spin the crank (minus the chain) it stops after about 2 or 3 rotations (unlike the wheels which just go on and on turning).
1)Do you think the BB is on the way out?
2) Should I pre-emptively replace the PF30 BB bearings as Im doing the LEJOG in May/June?
My local bike stores say their workshops are booked up well into May. So I might do it myself - but although Im capable, I dont have the special tools.
Can anyone recommend which bearings to use and which tools to buy.
Obviously I havent got the bearings out yet so I dont know what the bearings codes are.
Many thanks.

Park do a tool, BBT 30.4. It is pretty crude, as is PF30 - you basically worm it into the hole left after removing the cranks, and knock the old bearings out. Then you have two adaptors for a headset press (not supplied...) to press the new bearings in. I have the tool but haven't needed to use it yet.
The expensive bit is the headset press, but a long bolt, two washers and two nuts would work equally well.
FSA bearings should be ok, as PF30 is their thing.

I'd change them as you doing want them failing during a lejog.
It's easy to do with a bearing press.
Where a BB outs are you.
I have one you could borrow.
Place the bearings in the freezer So they press in easier
Cheers James

The unior 1625 is probably the best tool for removing it.

I think James lives up in Yorkshire somewhere?

Hambini (Google him) does a tool for removing and refitting the bearings. It may be that the bearings themselves are moving slightly in a badly machined bottom bracket shell, but it’s probably worthwhile fitting a new set of bearings while you are at it.

Get yourself one of these. It’s a wheels manufacturing PF30 to HT2 threaded conversion. It presses in, and screws together inside the frame, and means you can use a HT2 crankset. They also do a straight 30mm to 30mm conversion BB. It’s the best money I spent on my old 2014 Boardman pro Carbon. If you go for the HT2 conversion, you’ll need a HT2 chainset as well, I went for a Shimano Tiagra chainset.

You can also press a sleeve in to convert the frame to normal ISO threading, but I wouldn't bother unless it is consistently causing problems. Mine hasn't squeaked in 6 years on the original bearings. They don't seem to like the rain much, though.

Thanks for all the suggestions - just waiting on replies from various tool suppliers

You can knock the old ones out with judicious use of a hammer and punch. Just be careful not to mark the BB shell.
Re: Replacing PF30 BB on 2013 Boardman Carbon Road
Tools ordered.
Just so I'm clear on the process.
Im going to use a screwed extractor rather than the hammer variety.
The bike has a FSA PF30 BB30 bottom bracket with plastic shells.
Do the old 6806 bearings come out along with the plastic shells or do the bearings come out separately leaving the shells in situ ?
Should you replace the plastic shells along with the bearings or is it usual to replace just the bearings ?

Re: Replacing PF30 BB on 2013 Boardman Carbon Road
Ive watched several videos and Im confused.
Which are the "shells" ?
I thought the "cups" were the shells, but I think now some are referring to the hole in the frame as the "shell"?
Can someone please enlighten me as to the correct nomenclature..

The shell is the part of the frame that it presses into.
