Cannondale Bad Boy 8 2008 Front Wheel Replacement.

Post by ibanksy »

Hi guys,

I have a Cannondale Bad Boy 8 2008 which unfortunately had its front wheel and brake disc rotor stolen. I'm trying to find a wheel that will match as close as possible in appearance to the back but am finding it quite difficult to navigate the world of wheel / rim options and dimensions.

As far as I can see, my bike seems to more or less match this one online:
https://www.mtbr.com/threads/alfine-hub ... -8.482169/
http://lockies.blogspot.com/2008/06/can ... muter.html

I think the original wheel was listed as 'Sun DS-2, 32-hole'. I'm doubtful of finding this exact wheel to match, unless you guys have any tips on where to track it down? Failing that, I was thinking of buying something similar to this:
https://shop.mavic.com/en-gb/ksyriu...= ... &1038=3511

Before I do though I have a couple of techy questions:
1 - The front axle is listed as 12x100. Would this fit my bikes forks?
2 - My Disc brake was also stolen and i think it was 6 bolt. This Mavic is listed as centre lock, does it matter what type I buy as long as it fits the braking system (Avid juicy)?
3 - Anything else to consider?

Thanks

Agree: take it to a Cannondale dealer or ring/contact then.

I found this specification

https://www.bikepedia.com/QuickBike/Bik ... item=12723

That suggests its a 700c front wheel with a Sun DS-2 rim built on a Shimano HB-M475 hub. (this is a 100mm quick release - i.e QR - hub not a through axle one)

What is missing here in terms of speccing up a suitable replacement is how wide the rim is? My guess would be 17mm but it would be good to look at the REAR rim to check this. Does it say 622x17 on it? or does it say 622x19 ? (rim not tire btw..the tyre will always be wider)

The HB- M475 hub is good but not expensive and as you guessed it was a six bolt hub. I would pop around your local decathlon or look at their website ..i got a basic 6 bolt 26" front wheel (559x19) for £30 from them although I had to adjust the shockingly tight bearings.

e.g.
https://www.decathlon.co.uk/p/wheel-28- ... R-p-201483
(this looks like 622x20 ....how wide are your rims?)

(this would be the "quick" way of getting you back on the road...once you have a firm spec for the wheel you need there are lots of options including custom build)

Given you have got to buy a disc anyway then you could equally as well get a centrelock one..

I wouldnt worry about matching the look of the rims. .only you are going to notice :-)

Hi Guys,

Thanks for the replies, I've tried sourcing the original wheel through a few different canon dealers all of which have said they can't help.

I then planned to just to it to my local bike shop and hope they do a good job however I've decided not to as every time i go in with it they act like they'd rather not have to deal with it.

So I've kind of settled on the following components hoping they'll all work

Wheel - https://shop.mavic.com/en-gb/ksyrium-s- ... &1038=3511#

Disc Rotor - https://www.wiggle.co.uk/shimano-rt66-6-bolt-rotor
Adapter - https://www.wiggle.co.uk/shimano-6-bolt ... ter-rtad05

Tyre - https://www.wiggle.co.uk/continental-ul ... -road-tyre
700c 28mm

I measured the inside gap between my front forks which is approx 100mm

Does this all look like it would be compatible both with my bike and with each other component? I'm choosing to use a clincher tyre instead of tubeless as that's what im used to and have heard some worries about safety on tubeless. All ok to use that clincher tyre on that rim?

Cheers

I'd question the drop out on the fork, i can't see them on the photos.

from the wheel spec.

"Front axle: 12x100 thru axle, easily convertible to quick release with included adapters. Not compatible with 15mm through axles"

Earlier in the post you mention 12x100 axle. If your fork is a thru axle, then you will need to have or replace the thru axle for the bike if it was stolen.

If you have QR forks, which is also mentioned in the thread, then you will need the included adapters, and a front QR skewer.

You could also just buy a centerlock disc rotor rather than an adaptor and a 6 bolt rotor. but that would come down to preference. I'd be looking to match it with the back..

Also worth checking the back wheel size as mentioned above, to check it's match.

Yes .. also the original hub from the spec I pulled out above is a Shimano HB-M475. this has never been available in anything except standard 100mm QR.

Hi guys, couple of questions:

Jupestar - I think mine is QR forks, photo here.

Is this something extra that I'm going to have to buy in addition to the wheel?

Matching the back is why I'd be getting the 6 bolt adapter. I can't find a centre lock rotor that seems to match the rear.

Which bit should i measure to check if its 10mm v 12? There's a photo of my forks in the dropbox link above.

A regular (old fashioned) Q/R is always 10mm.
The confusion arises because you linked a through axle wheel.
Rim needs to be about 17mm width....internal width is what is usually measured.
Find a rim which isn't "tubeless ready" unless you intend to go tubeless, because tyres are often really tight on tubeless ready.

So you reckon my QR is 10mm? And therefore not compatible with that wheel? Sorry, I'm still a beginner at all this. Finding a suitable affordable wheel was the hardest part 😬

Your perhaps tackling this in the most costly and inconvenient way, if you want matching wheels which has never been a particular hang up of mine, I tend to call it if they are both round

Then buy a wheel and spray it black, if it isnt or take the stickers of if it is or alternately buy two matching wheels. Which can be procured from face book market place or gum tree for a few pounds, you may even get your original wheel back for 20 quid

Yes those forks are compatable with QR, or bolted axles, not Thru Axles.

You may need a QR skewer - if one is not supplied or you don;t have one -, and you want to enusre the QR axle adapters are included (it says they are). YOu may also need rim tape - although it should come with it on, and a inner tube.

Just to highlight Colins point on Tubeless vs Innertubes - if running tubed tyres on a tubeless rim, it can be a tight fit.

10mm basically means you should be able to fit a 10mm bolted axle in the drop outs or a QR axle. Which is basically a 10mm hollow axles which the QR goes though. You should be able to tell what you had previously, did you need a spanner to take the wheel off, or could you release the lever by hand? - Sounds like you had QR shimano hub before. If so i'd probably just stick with QR if you happy with that.

Thru Axle would be 12mm or 15mm, your fork does not take these.
