What did you do to your bike today

Post by ClappedOut »

Bike register offered by police so got the tandem registered and we will call it Herbie the vintage bicycle has paint like Teflon as they couldn't get any tamper stickers to stay on it after multiple alcohol wipes:lol:

Motored home on the tandem and avoided getting drenched

Replaced the bars and stem on the '81 Dawes Galaxy.
Old stem was 6.5cm length Old bars were 'Maes' pattern G.B and 36cm wide.
New stem is 8cm length New bars are G.B "Premier Marque de Grande Britaigne" and 39cm wide with a nice map of 'Old Blighty' engraved thereon, so I shouldn't get lost.

The bike has a (for me) very long top tube of 23" hence the short stem I fitted when I bought it. But during our burgeoning acquaintanceship it has been educating me to appreciate its charms. In addition, the SR seat post clamp doesn't grip the Brooks saddle rails well (they never did). consequently, the saddle can only be at it's rearmost adjustment, all of which makes for a stretched out riding position. So having got used to it and liked it I've decided that I can tolerate a bit more stretch. And I after aprox 35 miles of the new regimen, I do like it! It is good on the 'roughstuff' that I can't resist as well, which is a bonus.

Brought it out to the front garden to give it a good clean and caught the attention of a neighbour. Ended up sorting a puncture in his daughter's 12 inch pram tyre. Bike back in garage. :?

Set off in modest rain for a 10 mile round trip, once I had got past the point where I was committed, 400 yards, then the heavens opened

, got to the woods and the dog wouldnt get out of the carrier it was raining so hard, did some gymnastic things on the gymnastic rings the council had provided in the kids play ground

Made the dog get out and walk round the somme, sorry woods,
.cycled home still in a deluge, hit 400 yards from home and the sun came out

Had chips and boiled ham butties for tea, washed down with fiery ginger beer

Nothing, half glanced at it when I went in the garage.
You'll never know if you don't try it.

As it's raining yet again, and I can't do anything useful outside, I may as well clean Moulton's chain.
That's about it, I reckon.

Just done it.
Ten minute job including the time to wash out the Cyclone.

That chain was manky!
Loadsa black grit washed out of the Cyclone, so it just goes to show what 40+miles in the rain picks up.
Clean and shiny Campag chain now. The rest of the transmission is ok-ish, and can wait until the chain needs doing again.

Unbelievably, I cleaned it ! Finally, was inspired to clean my bike following the excellent advice of MickF and others and a recently purchased bottle of screwfix no nonsense degreaser. Thanks MickF !

Fitted crank shorteners to my wife's Kett. The change from 170mm to 130mm has been magical for my 4'10" wife, she's ecstatic :D

I need to change the hoses and generally service an elderly pair of Hope disc brakes. I hate working on hydraulics so I've been putting it off for months. It's raining today so I have at last started. Brakes off the bike, hoses removed, fluid all drained out. Cleaning everything and changing the seals is for tomorrow.

A thorough clean and check, then relube. Got caught out in the heaviest rain I’ve ridden in for years this morning, so bike desperately needed it. Oh, I had a hot shower afterwards a well
