Bike designs which should be binned

Post by james01 »

Top of my list is "Lawyer's Lips" on front forks. I have a special list of foul oaths for the bright spark who invented them.

Vertical dropouts.
Black components. I'll live with tyre treads and brake blocks.

Mudguard eyelets. Very annoying when you can't find any retro styled mudguards for a bike without eyelets. They could be fitted to the wheel axle.

Sloping crossbars. You can't get a 1-litre bottle into the back cage and extract it easily on the road. If you use a side-extraction cage, the bottle usually flops out a bit sideways and rubs on your leg.
Have we got time for another cuppa?

Elaborate sculpted dropouts that make it almost impossible to fit a rack or close a QR lever. I'm looking at you, Surly.

Aluminium non-Shimano Hyperglide cassette bodies with easily "gnashed" splines. I prefer not to take my cassette cogs off with a chisel. What Dilbert thought that one up Mr Hope ?

(PS.. yes I know you are supposed to tighten them up to some mad torque to avoid biting.. still a REALLY BAD idea though - made worse because the Shimano HG splined cassettes were such a REALLY GOOD idea. Its like some muppet has come along and said "oh look this works... lets screw it all up to save 10g then get weight obsessed idiots to buy it" )

Mountain bikes with electric motors attached to them that make it easier for skill-free beer guts to destroy trails

Cheap folding mountain bikes, a disaster waiting to happen as hinge doesn't close into each other so flex and loading on hinge and locking pin.

Secondly pressed steel rear mech and general abysmal quality

Think this https://www.argos.co.uk/product/6215363 turd
