Best bike for day rides and trips into town.
Best bike for day rides and trips into town.
I'm looking to buy a new bike. It'll be taking me into town but also on day rides around 50 miles. I need mudguards and a pannier rack, and the lighter, the better. Also, I like quite an upright riding position, so flat handlebars may be better than drops, but probably not essential depending on the set-up. My budget is around £1000. I've had a quick look and am wondering about a Genesis Croix de Fer. Any suggestions, please? Thanks.

I'm a big fan of the Croix de Fer, but it doesn't fit with your preferences for 'lighter the better' or 'flat handlebars...better than drops'. Have you checked what is available? That is usually the big stumbling block in 2021.

There is a flat bar version, and a bike shop not too far away stocks it. But yes, the weight at 12kg is not exactly light.

As light as...

My wife & I both have Whytes and they ride very nicely indeed. Just make sure that the rack & pannier you fit will allow you heel clearance.
