T10 bolt not moving

Post by Jupestar »

Trying to bleed a set of Elixir Avid 5, the tiny T10 bolt for the bleed port, in the lever is not willing to give an inch, it looks really rusty. I know i'm going to strip it, if i go much more!

Any advice to get it out? - i've jst sprayed it with WD40 - not ideal that close to the hydraulic fluid, but what can you do..

Can you add a photo?

Are you sure that it's a T10 rather than something similar?

Edited: They are!

I'd try a penetrating fluid such as PlusGas rather than ordinary WD-40. (There is a WD-40 penetrating fluid.)

What's nearby... could you use heat?

Manual says t10, t10 fits…..

But I know as I force it that it’s on the limit.

If I had some sort of a plan b for stripping it I’d go harder, but I don’t. No idea what I would do, if I strip it.

Drilling it out…. Never once have I succeeded in this…

Thanks.

That might have crossed with my thought about heat.

Have you tried turning the other way a bit to break the stiction?

If it comes to destroying the bolt how about cutting a transverse slot with a Dremel and then using a straight screwdriver? But only after a good soak with penetrating fluid and trying the T10 tool again.

Good point forgot about that, used successfully before as well.

Yes - same.

I have a few jobs which could do with a dremel. Including a collection of HT2 left cranks. MIght be time in invest.

Any tips for getting the Plus Gas to work. Spray on? get the oil and soak it somehow. Maybe a oiled rag around the bolt, or literally just leave it soaking..

No evidence but these are 2010 and the first time I’ve bleed them.

Reckon it would have long since gone.

When shifting stuck steel screws/bolts in aluminium I have used a paint stripper (or my daughter in laws 2 kW hair dryer) to warm the ally.

Completed the bleed this morning, and new pads. Like brand new brakes. Pretty sure that would be the first time they have ever been bleed.
