Kick stand

Post by roberts8 »

I often stop and paint when out for a ride and thought it would easier to use a kick stand to stop anywhere to unload the bike or use it as a support.
I have an aluminium Rockhopper so wondered if it would be OK to fit one to the rear stay or will it rotate or damage the frame.

Thanks

I used to have one which attached to the end of the rear triangle. It was okay, but occasionally when you thought you left your bike parked in a stable position it would occasionally fall over. I eventually passed it on to someone else and in honesty, I can't say I missed it.

I might be in the thread linked by Jdsk having crushed the chainstays on one tourer with a kickstand mounted behind the bottom bracket.

That hasn't stopped me using rear triangle mounted kickstands, albeit on frames that I'd class as workhorse rather than best.

An alternative coule be http://www.click-stand.com/, I believe a few forumites have made DIY versions.

One of these would do the job http://www.click-stand.com/ They are not cheap but are very good. I can't imagine that it would be too difficult to fashion a DIY job.

Ah, but it's not a kick stand, it's a prop. :) Good idea though, far better than stressing the frame where it was never designed to be stressed.

I used a fishing rod stand on my old tourer. My German E Bike has a rear stay mounted kick stand, its excellent. Dutch and German clunker bikes all have them. You do have to be careful not to crush the stays though.

Seems a quick way to work a square taper crank loose, or knock pedal bearing cones loose.

I very much doubt it. The portion of the bike's weight resting on the pedal and crank would be very much less than the weight they support when the bike is ridden, and not at all regularly repeated.
My fear is that a careless pedestrian would knock the bike so it fell into the road.

On this forum, kickstands appear to be as divisive as Brexit. You can definitely damage your frame from incorrect installation, but go careful and you should be alright. I’ve had success with rear triangle stands such as the Hebie Fox 611.

If you fit a kickstand it will be hilarious. Most decorators round here have a small van!

You mean decorators have tiny vans that run along the pavement and occasionally bump into cycle kick stands?
Are these vans battery driven? Inquiring minds need to know.
