650B Wheelset recomendations for Diverge e5 Aluminum

Post by clickclocks »

Hi, I own a specialized diverge e5 comp 2021. I'm thinking in upgrade the wheels to 650B but there are so many option that is getting confuse for me to pick the right one. any help would be apreciated.

any of these will work?

How rim width and thickness will affect?
Plan is instaling Vittoria Mezcal 2.25" tyres.

Any cheaper alternative would helpfull too.

Cheaper option - no personal knowledge, but Alpkit's reputation is excellent:

I have no direct experience of Hunt's wheels, however, some very dissatisified customers have posted on the yacf forum and that has put me off them. For that kind of money I would suggest getting some built by hand. I had some built by Spa recently and they have been fine so far.

In what way are you hoping this will be an upgrade?
I can understand if the sort of use you have would benefit from the smaller wheels and wider tyres, otherwise I can't see what you have to gain. Particularly as you then intend to put quite hefty MTB tyres on it.

Are you going to gain that much going 650b? The bike can take 47mm tyres with the current 700c wheels. Also, Spesh only rate the maximum width as 2.1" in 650b, so those Mezcals might not fit.

Any 12x142 mm thru-axle wheelset will work ok. With GRX you will want a standard Shimano style freehub.

Both those wheels would work with your bike, my question, however, is what are you trying to improve with them. Considering you are going for heavier tyres I'd suggest robust wheels are more important than weight. Maybe look at what a wheelbuilder like Spa Cycles could do for you, where you could spec rims and hubs to do exactly what you want.
