Cinelli 1R bar clamp bolt

I've just seen this thread (no pun intended) Mick. If my memory serves me right I thought that Cinelli 1R stem bolts used a 7mm allen key. If so it might explain your problem. I could be wrong...

i'd check with hilary stone to see if he has any spare originals.

he advertises quite a few 1R stems so maybe has a few odd bolts from damaged/broken ones.

Hi guys.

Out on a ride tomorrow with the re-tightened 1R.
Served me well since 1986, and if it still is fine, it'll see me out. 69 years old this autumn, and feeling my age.
Put Mercian together when I was in my early/mid 30's ....................

When I decided on the 1R, it was because I was buying Cycling Weekly back then, and the "racers" all seemed to have them. The 1R looked swish and clean and very nice indeed. If the pro riders used them, it was good enough for me.

Definitely 6mm.

This is the one out of Barbarella's 1R ........ Mrs Mick F's bike she's not been on for months.
Took it out to check.
Both of them ........ her's and mine ......... identical .............. though her's is in better condition.

Not put Barbarella's back in as yet, so it's here to photograph to prove it.
7mm metric fine.
6mm Allen key.

No knowledge of them other than what they look like.

I only have experience of the 1R.

I think that it was the Atax brand.

Cinelli:
"The earliest stems used a 7mm Allen key to tighten the expander bolt and the handlebar clamp bolt had a 12mm nut on the reverse (this continued until around 1972). The Allen key needed for the expander bolt was then changed to a 6mm which meant that one Allen key served to tighten the expander bolt and the handlebar clamp bolt. The earliest stems and bars were not anodised. In the 1970s black anodising became an option and the logo changed to the winged C after the company was sold in 1978.

"The 1A stem continued in production into the 1990s, but there was a hiccup in the 1970s when Cinelli launched a new stem, the 1R, with a concealed handlebar clamp, which was not very successful because it was difficult to tighten the clamping wedge sufficiently to prevent the bars from slipping. I don’t think Cino can have been happy with this design, although it had a very clean appearance and survived until the late 1980s."

I think the point about the 6mm hex key is that that was the size of the Campag T shaped allen key with 8mm socket

I found 7mm on cheap French bikes.

I can confirm two things.
The stems are anodised silver.
The expander bolt is 6mm Allen.



Also, the word is spelled hiccough .................... not hiccup.

I understand it was late 16th century, but so what?

I went to skool in the 1960s and I have GCE English, so I know how things are spelled ........... or is it spelt?

Mick, I have a couple of M7 cap head machine screws, but the pitch seems to be 1mm....the same as a regular M6 bolt.
You are welcome to them, but I don't think they are what you need?
(mine are "reduced head size" ....smaller diameter head and they take a 6mm Allen key....from a handlebar stem I think.....)

Thanks Colin, but M7 threads are normal 1mm pitch.
M7 is hard enough to find methinks.

Metric fine is 0.75mm (I think) and the M7 is impossible to find.
