Road bike with 40T cassette (cont.)
Road bike with 40T cassette (cont.)
Following on from viewtopic.php?f=5&t=146895, (which was well and truly hijacked and turned into a "what's wrong with triples" thread, to which I say, nothing; I have bikes with triples and like bikes with triples, but that has nothing to do with this project) I promised to report on what happened when I got the cranked gear hanger extender.
Well, basically, I have succeeded. It works on the stand at least. Here are the various hangers I tried.
1) cheapo cranked unbranded: useless - bolt made of soft aluminium. I managed to strip both the outer hex and the inner torx recesses with very little force.
2) expensive, straight Wolf Tooth: does not work with 105 RD-5701-SS or GS mech. The hanger being straight, the mech is displaced outwards which puts the low gear stretch into a region with reduced movement to cable pull ratio.
3) mid-price, cranked RISK: Success! There is no stop to engage with the b-screw step on the main hanger, so some adjustment of the rotational position of the extender is required to get reliable high gear selections.
And the finished article...
Sacrilege to some, I know but won't it be fun going up the local 20+% hills, sitting down and not going under 60 or maybe even 70 rpm?
p.s. I did have to go with the longer cage GS mech. Even then, it was a tricky chain length adjustment to get disaster free, but still to be avoided, big-big and small-small operation

Interesting, and well done. I'd really like to hear how it goes for you on the road
I have a Sunrace adapter and 11-40 cassette waiting for me to fit on my Gravel bike (with a Tiagra 4700 GS), but I haven't got up the courage to try it yet. I'm looking forward to a 34x40 for riding up steep forestry tracks here in the Lakes

Interesting, and good to know about the RISK.
I've had success with a 40T using a Wolf Tooth but that was with Ultegra Di2. This sounds like a better option if / when I want to put ever-lower gears on my other bike.

Thanks. It could be a while before I hit the road with a mudguard-less bike, what with the weather, then it's school holidays so grandparent duties call. It's also soon Broadstairs Folk Week where I'll be on double bass duties... very glad I'm retired

I'm running 34 front to 40 or 42 rear with a 105 GS or Force WiFli derailleur plus a road link copy (on 2 different boiks). I can get all gears including small/small and big/big without any unpleasant (gear related) side effects.
Re: Road bike with 40T cassette (cont.)
I have similar setups on a couple of bikes. Shimano 11-40 11-speed cassettes on both bikes, one bike uses SRAM Force 22 shifters with an X9 MTB RD, the other has Dura-Ace barend shifters shifting a GRX 810 RD plus Wolftooth.

To be fair, if you titled the thread "Problems with a Wolf Tooth extender" it might have stayed more focussed on what it turns out you had in mind.fausto99 wrote: ↑30 Jul 2021, 9:32am Following on from viewtopic.php?f=5&t=146895, (which was well and truly hijacked and turned into a "what's wrong with triples" thread.........................
