Project #1 started!
Further to the conversation here:-

I now have my old 90s ATB and what a monstrocity my father-in-law has turned it into.No idea what he was thinking with the fork/stem/bars combo
Most of the parts are scrap but oddly the integrated brake/shifters still appear to work(free to a good home if anyone can use them)and the wheels are true but require new bearings(also free to a good home if anyone can use them).Quill stem just needs a clean.(free to good home).
So I've stripped it down:-
Have had two quotes to re-chrome it...£325 and £720 I'm going to spend some time with wire-wool and wet&dry to see what the outcome is.
Going to rebuild it with modern parts into a MTB/CX crossbreed.
Glad to have it back.

Re: Project started!
Beauty is in the eye of the beholder.
I wonder if your FIL had a back problem? It might account for the height of the bars.

No it's just the way it came back from the lbs when he had it done.Looks to me like the fork they put on it,possibly the only one they had,was too long(steerer). As it's an old threaded type it couldn't be cut as the threads only run part way down the tube.It was done almost 20 years ago so his memory is the issue not his back He's not even sure why he put the fork on in the first place as the stock rigid fork was all good.francovendee wrote: ↑3 Aug 2021, 8:34am Beauty is in the eye of the beholder.

No matter it's off and scrap now.
Re: Project started!
You know what, I might be keen for the wheels!
It’ll help with my own project thread (possibly)!

Re: Project started!
Ignore the nay slayers...!
I'd paint it possibly just primer and use it as a daily / station bike.
Once you start upgrading it you end up not wanting to lock it up places!
Decent brakes shifter and saddle are valuable upgrades imho.
Looks good.
Cheers James

Re: Project started!
Cool! Looking forward to seeing how the build. Do you know going for a single, double or triple chainring(s) ? I got a 43 tooth single chainring with a 110 bcd circle if you want it

Thanks for the offer!cycle tramp wrote: ↑3 Aug 2021, 10:14pmCool! Looking forward to seeing how the build. Do you know going for a single, double or triple chainring(s) ? I got a 43 tooth single chainring with a 110 bcd circle if you want it
I'm going to go for a standard road compact(36/50) possibly with 11-34 or 11-36 cassette.Similar gearing to my old CX bike.I did think about 1X11 but the cassettes with the massive ring are silly money!
Re: Project started!
For anyone interested I've completed stage 1.
After looking into chrome-plate removal and basically hitting a wall I decided to remove it myself.I used a good old car workshop DA(Dual Action) sander which is basically an orbital sander with a more flexible pad.So I've done a pass with 60 then 120 grit paper.I'll do a pass each with 320 the 400 then to hand finishing with wet&dry starts.I've removed the rear brake bosses as they will be surplus to requirements.
Chrome plating gone:-
Rear Bosses:-
Stage 1 cut off:-
Stage 2 filed then sanded:-
Stage 3 done:-
Frame surface looks a bit rough at the minute but it will get better
I might struggle to remove the square taper BB as the slots for the removal tool are practically non existent on the non-drive side.
