Replacement for Shimano Acera MT210 Crankset

Post by Rich »

I need to replace my Shimano Acera MT210 Crankset ( 175 mm / 40/30/22t ) but cannot find one anywhere - a couple of sites list them but then when I place an order they are out of stock.
Can anyone advise where I can obtain one, or suggest a suitable alternative - without having to replace Hollotech BB ?
Thanks

Just my own curiosity, is this for a tourer?

I have a cheap, pressed steel Altus 42, 32, 22 on my Marin MTB / tourer.

It works really well actually, but I have been hankering after a fancier chainset which might look a bit better and more quality. Like some Spa chainset, or old Deore stuff.

But the truth is, I find my cheap Altus chainset perfectly good enough.

Is this a minority view among tourers? Also, isn't it actually better to steel chainrings than alloy ones?

I use similar cheap steel ringed chainsets on my tandem. They last far longer than the original alloy ring version. :D
At the last count:- Peugeot 531 pro, Dawes Discovery Tandem, Dawes Kingpin X3, Raleigh 20 stowaway X2, 1965 Moulton deluxe, Falcon K2 MTB dropped bar tourer, Rudge Bi frame folder, Longstaff trike conversion on a Giant XTC 840 :D

This is rather what I suspected. Interesting that you are using one on a tandem, and it copes with that weight.

Given the choice, steel chainrings are surely better for everything except they weigh a bit more? If they bend, you bend them back with an adjustable spanner or similar (as I once did with a neighbour's son's bike).

I do actually have a Deore triple FC-MT60, with an alloy 48T that I could swap out for a spare 42T alloy replacement.

I am not sure that it would be anything other than a visual improvement. I would need a new, much longer bottom bracket as it mounts far further away from the frame, and I question whether the chainline would be as good as it is with the Altus.

So I think I will just stick with what I have got, and worry about this in ten year's time or so.
