Tyres,tubes,sizes

Post by oldtimer99 »

Can I ask your help again people. Just when I thought I knew it all ha ha
Had a nightmare ride on Thursday, with Mrs OT
Riding beautiful lanes in southern lakes. Mr Farmer had been flailing hedges. 4 punctures. Ran out if tubes, co2 and patience. Taxi involved.
So...to the point. Replacing tubes and finding my bike is running 700x28. Mrs OT new bike is running 40x622.
Google says this is also a 700 tyre. (??). So are there tubes I can carry that will fit both bikes in the event of similar horror stories. Spoiled my 6000 miles without the p**** fairy
Thanks in advance

Schwalbe AV 17, covers 700 X 28 - 45 tyre sizes. (AV = schreader (car) valves. If you want presta, it is SV 17).

I find SV 17 a bit of a squeeze into 700 X 28 when fitting (but is fine to fit 700 X 32).
SV 16 is a better fit for 28mm tyres, these are rated as 700 X 28 - 32 size range.

700 is the nominal outer tyre (tread) diameter). 622 is the tyre bead/rim seat diameter.

There should be a law forcing Mr Hedgetrimmer to shoot the debris over to the field side of the hedge, not just dump it in the road.

I think that hedge clippings actually satisfy the legal definition of "Litter" ... (retired Police Officer)
I had quite an animated discussion with a farmer once on this subject, narrow country lane, no way of avoiding the debris.

700c is really 622 so as long as the tube is not way too big ( a 50mm one won't go in a 25mm tyre) they are all interchangeable. A 25mm tube will happily work in a 50mm tyre although it will be a bit stretched out and thus maybe a bit fragile. Cheapy ones may not cope as well. Just pick what ever you can get that sits roughliy in the middle if you want to fit two bikes, erring on the narrow side.
Re the farmers. Their lively hood comes way before our recreation. You could always pick up the bike and walk a bit.

Walk a bit....yup
These hedges were over a distance of about 5 miles...not continous, and we're on narrow lanes with leaf litter. You couldn't see the debris coming, and were talking spiky stuff up to 4cm.long.
No worries though....chalk it down to experience.
Thanks for the tube helps people

I don’t see how whether they cut their hedges affects their livelihood, at least not on the road side of the hedge. It’s more likely that they wish to keep them looking “nice”. From wildlife’s point of view, an untidy hedge is better, as it provides more cover from predators and more food (berries) through the winter.

I used to work for Defra and we used to pay farmers NOT to cut their hedges every year as it was better for wildlife. Having spoken to many farmers over the years, hedge cutting gives them something to do in the autumn/winter.

Or for presta valves there's the X-Light SV18 which Schwalbe claim covers 28 - 44, the lower bulk might make them a better fit in 28's, they do fine in my bikes from 32 to 40.
I bought a pack of four a few years ago to get an order over the free postage threshold, they were no dearer than other Schwalbe tubes. In use I haven't really noticed any advantage, or disadvantage, but for spares the smaller pack size is nice.

Could also consider going tubeless, otherwise getting some tyres which are bit more puncture-resistant i.e. Marathon Plus if you don't mind the bit of extra weight.

Puncture repair kit and a pump would have solved that, probably in less time than you waited for the taxi. Even the self adhesive patches would have been OK, though they're probably more reliable on the lower pressure 40's than the 28's.
