I don't have any Shimano to compare , but I have 1992 to 2010 Campag Ergo levers. 1992 (a guess) 8 speed Record, 1998 8 speed Veloce, 2006 (possibly) 10 speed Record and 2010 10 speed Centaur. The only ones that have shown a problem of any sort has been the 2010 Centaur where the cable run through the hood differs to earlier designs. After 15000 miles I happened to check and found that the cable was breaking apart where it bends through the hood, although everything still worked just fine - for the moment. I have discarded those levers and now just have the older design. I have never had a nipple stick in the housing, but you really must use Campag compatible cables which have smaller diameter nipples than others.

Thanks.
BN: I may have two sets of 2010 Centaurs.
GN: if the cables last 15000 miles , I'll be pretty happy!
