Front mech: how much force on the frame?

Post by tenbikes »

I have a bamboo frame, currently 1x, but with an inner ring I can drop down to manually should I need to.

Tube dia. is 35.5mm

Is fitting a front mech going to be a disaster in terms of stressing the bamboo tube?

There are no cable stops so the outer would have to be a full run like the rear mech. Is that even possible with a front mech?

Thoughts?

Cheers

A very imprecise answer is not much. You move it with your thumb after all.

As to bamboo ? I really want one. Its reputed to be just as strong as aluminium. I doubt that if it will with stand the rigours of road riding a front mech will destroy it. I have with admittedly some trepidation been a 100ft up on a bamboo scaffold with out disaster. But google a few pics of bamboo bikes and see if any have a front mech. If not there may be a good reason why not.But anyway one bys are the future

Are any load-spreading mechanisms used for other attachments?

Thanks

Google pics shows lot of bamboo bikes with front mech

So it would appear feasible

Not externally, but obviously the seat tube, bb and head tube have alloy tubes inserted.
Rear mech and rear brake cables are internal from the head tube to the seat tube areas, then zip tied.

Do you know how far the reinforcement goes down the seat tube?

Can you get front mechs with cable stops on them now? It’s a few decades since I last saw one.

Can you see a way of fitting something longer to act as an internal sleeve that would spread the load from a clamp?

Not a chance of that I'm afraid.

? I dunno, but given the number of bike with internal cable runs I would have thought so. I'll check with the LBS later this week.

In my limited experience of internal gear cables (2 bikes) they still have cable stops and the cables run bare inside the frame. So it will be interesting to hear what your LBS says. Maybe you can get a cable stop on a band that clamps beneath your front mech?

How about an external sleeve?

If you use a bottom pull front mech you can simply run the cable under the BB either using a guide or through a section of outer cable (no need for cable stops as the tension will hold it in place if set up without slack in the cable).
