twist shifter alternatives

Post by steff30 »

Hello, this is my first time here. I have a small folding bike with a shimano nexus 3 speed in hub gears SG-3R40 and i changed the handlebars and the twist shifter does not fit my new setup. I would like to buy a trigger shifter but have no idea if its compatible or not. thank you

Welcome to the forum.

The shifter you've tried to link above is intended to shift the front derailleur of a MTB triple chainring set up. I would be very surprised if it were compatible with a 3 speed Shimano hub.

SL-C2010-3 is one option SHIMANO NEXUS - RAPIDFIRE PLUS - Shifting Lever for INTER-3 Hub: https://bike.shimano.com/en-EU/product/ ... 010-3.html, there may be others.

This is where we really miss Brucey, he could probably list many shifters with the requisite cable pull. I have a vague recollection that the old Sturmey Archer trigger shifter would work - but don't quote me on that :?

Yes, that's my recollection too, but I think Shimano hubs are low-loose, so the numbering is reversed compared to what's shown. Also, like SA 3 speed hubs, Shimano 3s are pretty unfussy about shifting, so as long as the middle position is set accurately, the slack is slack enough and the tight doesn't snap the cable, it'll work. It is much more forgiving than hubs with more gears.

It is far simpler to use a Shimano Nexus shifter if you can get a suitable one and it won't invalidate any warranty you still have.
