Postby lauriematt » 24 Jun 2009, 1:57pm

hi there...im replacing the bottom bracket on the MTB which hasnt been done in years

the problem though,is that alot of the plastic 'teeth' on the cup are mostly broken off!

any suggestions?
im thinking i might have to resort to the soldering iron & try to melt it out

If it's a Shimano and you are refitting a Shimano then could you leave it in? The BB will remove from the steel cup side (usually the "fixed cup" side), the replacement screw back in from the same side. The plastic "cup" is just a shim rather than a traditional adjustable cup.

If you do want to take it out then IIRC the plastic bit is fairly brittle. I'd guess a couple of scores across with a stanley knife might be all it takes to weaken it enough to snap it out without damaging the BB threads.

I have heard tales of FAG bottom bracket cups being burnt out with a blow torch, last resort?
