Chainset Compatibility

I have an eight speed mountain bike transmission set up on my do everything bike, and wish to change the ageing chainset. Edinburgh Bicycle Co. say that their better quality sets (Deore+) are only suitable for nine speed chains. I vaguely remember something in CTC mag. by Chris Juden saying that this is not so. Advice please as I do not wish to go to nine speed.

Any 9 speed ones will work fine. I run a 10 speed chainset with 7s.
