If i'm not mistaken the later model frame number sequence is more consistent and logical (I mean late 80's on). As I said google it, contact Dawes, etc. you will need to do some legwork

Perhaps a better way to date a galaxy is to post a picture of the bike on here if it is original. Over the last 20 years or so the different ages of bike can be identified by paint, fittings, frame design etc. I rebuilt a Galaxy last spring and many of the shimano parts were stamped '94, which sort of gave me a clue...........

In addition I think the tour was circa 2000-2004. Mine is a 2002

I just have the frame only. The components were Deore looks like it was originally 9 speed it is a 22.5" frame and the stand over height is 83cm a bit more than my 80's Galaxy which is 22.5" and 82cm:

That would almost certainly be an '02, just like my old deceased Gal.

How do you tell the difference between say a 2000, 2001, 2002 ,2003 etc...

What are the very best years for a Dawes Galaxy?

Seconded - The decals, seat, handlebar stem and brake levers are identical to my '02 as of when I bought it, although mine now sports an adjustable stem and the ubiquitous Brooks B17 saddle

That's subjective of course. I had originally considered my '94 (sadly now deceased after the lady I sold it to had a prang), was superior in ride to the '02 I now have, but after a wheel rebuild on the '02 I don't think there is much, if anything, in it. In reality, who knows, they are all good quality off the peg bikes.

I would tend to think the newer the better, as the componentry has improved would be the only true answer, but no doubt I'll now invoke a flurry of responses from "experts" wallowing in nostalgia and comparing the vagaries of trivia!

Good workhorses!
I like the all rounder capabilities of these bikes.

Well, if you're really bored you could study eBay for a while and build up some knowledge. What the best years are, I'm not sure. The '98 frame I had was Brum built but a bit rough looking in the brazing, which hadn't been tidied up. Indeed the braze ons were welded on, which didn't look that nice. I don't think it's ever been a super high quality frame - just a good solid work horse. I did like the look of the last Brum built ones in BRG though, but I'm not willing to pay the premium demanded on eBay for a frame that is inferior to something like a Bob Jackson.

I suppose as long as it fits and can do the job in comfort that's all we can ask!
