Derailleur hanger for horizontal droupout frame?

Post by GrahamG »

Morning all,

I've got an old steel frame which I'm building up as a commuter but it has no braze-on for the rear derailleur on the dropouts. I can find all sorts of dropout replacements online but there doesn't seem to be any adaptor for this kind of arrangement to enable the use of a modern derailleur - am I wrong in thinking that this is available???!

Thanks,

Graham

I suspect that this part is not readily available new these days. Any bikes still built with a lack of an integrated mech hanger will be of the gas tube variety with low end Shimano or other cheap rear mechs that come with this part as standard. But a good LBS is likely to have some deep drawers full of useful old parts like this waiting to find a new life on a bike such as yours.

Shimano Gear Hanger SKU 5577-19726 £5.03 at dotbike.com
Sunrace also do one for about half that price.

These are still standard on cheap deraileurs and thrown away if fitted to a frame with a braze on. If you are friendly with an lbs, it's the sort of thing they have in the bits and pieces box - as somebody else posted the last time this came up.

My nearest LBS is opposite a bank HQ where presumably the emplyees spend their huge bonuses. They told me to go to Halfords and buy a cheap mech otherwise they could sell me a new frame but to be honest I would be better off buying a new bike. I had a quick look round, but there was nothing under about £1500, so I went to the intrnet and found the shimano hanger for £4. That's a 25% price rise! So much for low inflation

My Cotic Road Rat has a tensioner with a mech hanger built in which may fit other bikes (depends on the slot size)

They're £11.75.

That looks interesting.Could be bit messy when you have to take the wheel out though couldn't it? Surely it means that the rear changer and chain is then dangling loose and un-secured to the bike?
