Wear Indicators on Rims

Postby SR » 24 Jan 2005, 2:18pm

My Alesa Endeavour rims are looking a bit tired.

How and when does the wear indicator manifest itself on this rim? Is it obvious?

I know that the best way of measuring the wear is with a bent spoke and a micrometer but I'm feeling lazy!

Groove then slits appear about halfway up the brake track as it wears through into the pinning hollow.

I cut mine in half when they got to the usual point at which I would normally replace them. I was pleased to see that there was still loads of wear left in them & even when the groove appears there quite strong enough to complete a tour on. So I shall wait fo the next set to show the complete groove before replacement.

Thanks for the replies.

I've managed to resist the temptation to do the destructive test!

The back rim looked to be at the point where the previous rim split (Mavic @#@#!!!) but from what you say it looks like it's good for a few more miles.

The next question is what to replace it with when the time comes since I believe that these rims are no longer made.

Thanks
