Am considering converting the old 531 to indexed gears, but am not willing to spend £100+ on STIs, so was thinking of using Down Tube shifters instead - various places have these at £40 per pair (and get some cheap new brake levers)

I've got a nine speed block at the back - is there any problem with using 10 speed shifters? CRC have the Dura Ace ones at £40 at the moment

Also - can you use Campag shifters on Shimano gears???

Yes, that would almost certainly be a problem.

But Shimano 9 speed DT shifters can't be that hard to find, otherwise why not 9 speed bar enders?
