Broken bar end shifter?

Post by aide555 »

Hi all,

Looking for a bit of advice on my bar end shifters that I’ve got on my Dawes Galaxy. For the last couple of weeks the indexing has become a little “hit and miss”. I originally put this down to my grubby chain and/or sticky cable but on closer inspection there’s a little plastic ring that has broken. I’ve now switched them to “friction” mode (I quite like this it takes me back to my youth!) but I’ve got a few questions:
• Is this a common fault with these and if so is there anything I can do to prevent this happening in the future
• Is it OK to carry on using the shifter on friction mode or will it explode into a million pieces

As always many thanks for your help

I can't answer your question but when I broke a bolt on my bar end shifters, I managed to get the individual spare part from Petra Cycles http://www.petracycles.co.uk/index.php . No connection to them, and I had to wait while for it to come in stock but much better than buying the whole bar end lever. V rare now!

NB I mean very rare to be able to buy the piece rather than the whole unit :)

I've never, ever heard of a barend shifter collapsing.

It could come loose though.
