Hand cleaning on a ride

Post by ukdodger »

Yonks ago a company marketed a hand cleaner for grease that required no water. You just rubbed this white stuff all over your hands and it went into sticky little balls with all the grease sticking to the little balls. Then the balls fell off leaving your hands cleaner than if you'd used swafega and water. Sadly that company no longer exists. Has anyone used anything similar today? I get really cheesed off having to cycle with dirt and oil on my hands after putting the chain back on. Thanks.

Baby wipes. surprising how much grease they'll shift, I pop a few in a baggy before a ride. They're not bad for bike cleaning too.

Latex gloves, but wet wipes good too.

I've also found some oils more stubborn to remove than others. I use Motorex Wet Lube, which isn't as staining.

I also carry surgical gloves, I like the fetchingly coloured ones.

Suntan lotion - a multi-tasking product ! - but use disposable gloves - I keep the spare tubes in my saddle bag packed in vinyl gloves - Lakeland sell boxes of 100 gloves for not a lot. (I also have a couple of CO2 cartridges in the fingers of a glove - stops them rattling around)

Thanks chaps. Like the idea of the gloves I'll give them a try if I cant find the right stuff. It's a shame Holts discontinued the product. It was magic to use.

We have a tub of wipes in our work van I think I have seen something simmilar in Halfords. You could put some in a poly bag. They do tend to dry your skin out if they are used too often but they are ok for occasional use.

Latex gloves tend to stick together when damp before use, can only be used once (normally) and leave a dust on your hands.
The clear plastic gloves sold for decorating have non of the above problems and are cheaper.

The latex or vinyl gloves (I prefer vinyl) are good but I keep getting the ends of the fingers caught when trying to refit a tyre. If the chain comes off the front rings I hunt about for a lolly stick or twig and use it to feed the chain on from the bottom of the ring and turn the crank backwards.

Grass. Unless you're riding through a concrete jungle, it's usually available close by, cheap, and very good for cleaning hands in emergencies!
