Compact chainsets compatability question

Postby tb » 4 Nov 2010, 7:33pm

has anyone experience / is it possible to use a ' modern ' compact chainset with eight speed chain and cassette ?

Good quality compact ( 50 / 34 ) chainsets are available for use with 9 / 10 speed transmissions which run with narrower chains.

I currently use both Shimano & Campag 8 speed ( on seperate bikes ! )

any ideas gratefully received

thanks

Yes it is fine, in fact I havent seen a crankset sold as 8 speed for years.
All of my six, nine and eight speed bikes run on the same cranksets and chainrings.
The only possible problem is a mismatch between the chain and the front deraileur on an indexed bike. Which is not too hard to bodge anyway.

Yes. SJS Cycles do a 110bcd chainset for £24.99, which has worked ok with my shimano 8 spd system (Though the steel chainrings, only lasted six months due to excessive wear)
