Repair Magnesium Frame

Post by peak_ing »

A few years ago I bought a magnesium frame that had a crack in the seatpost, almost half way round. it is near the top above the seat stays and top tube. Tidying the garage I have re-found the frame and would like to build it up. does anyone know of a company or person that could weld or repair the crack. Ideally somewhere around south Manchester/Stockport area.

There's a framebuilder/repairer named Vernon Barker who can weld aluminium and titanium, he might be worth a call (01246)411759 Monday & Friday only. He's in Dronfield just south of Sheffield.

Was it one of the Kirk frames (road or MTB) ?

I've got a Kirk frame in storage that I might part with

Thanks PW, I'll give him a call.

Pete, it is a Merida MTB hardtail frame, thought I would build it up to a lightweight off road racer.

Obviously Vernon Barker will be more up to date on what can be done nowadays.
I have a motorcycle which uses magnesium very extensively (but not the frame) and I have always been told that you can not weld it.
Possibly it was just that "they" could not weld it.

You could always make a fibreglass "bandage" around the crack.
