deep drop front cantilever cable guide

Post by specialist »

I've changed my tandem to use sti, so it now has aero routed brake cables, it has got cantilevers and the cable guide on the headset is quite close to the handlebars so the cable is very sharply curved, and i have to have the bars quite high. Does anyone know where to get (or have that they don't need) a deep drop cable guide with an adjustment barrel, that will fit on a quill stem?

That seems to be a rare item these days, the modern ones are all shallow drop. Maybe a club saddlebag sale or some local enthusiast who deals in old bits from his shed? (Can't beat the Sheddist Classes!)

There also exists an upward hanger that mounts off the fork crown. Not sure who makes or sells them though.

I first saw these on the previous generation of Center Parcs bikes (before they went V-brake) and this year's Ridgeback Panorama touring bike, from Madison Cycles, also has one.

I saw the upward hanger on sheldon brown, but the $100 dollars to order from the states seems a bit steep. Not quite convinced about the design too, surely it is asking for the nut to loosing on the fork crown, and the hanger to rotate?

You are reducing your potential for a 'bits and pieces' one by asking for one with an adjuster. For example, I doubt if I now have one left, but if I have, it will be a Mafac (no adjuster) so it is pointless me even opening the garage door to look.

Brake hanger

thirdcrank is partly right.

What about getting the MFAC one and fitting an adjuster yourself? I would try using a cable adjuster from a cheap Shimano mech. Drill hole, tap and fit adjuster.

Yes, the securing bolt does have to be tight or else the "uphanger" rotates, but it's a 6mm bolt and if fully torqued up that is not a problem.
One UK source may be Center Parcs' metal recycling bins, as the cantilever brake generation of children's bikes, that had this hanger (adult models had the usual hanger on the headset) are now being retired.

I've had a look at my current on more closely, and see that the adjuster is on with a thread that drops into the hanger, with a flat on one side of the top lip so it doesn't rotate, so hopefully I can just use an unthreaded one. Thanks all.

Re: Upwards hanger. I bought a solid alloy one from my LBS for about a fiver. It's made by Fisher Outdoor Products. Hope this helps.

Good Luck,

This is the Fisheroutdoor brake spares page. A couple of stem mounted types but no obvious sign of anything else.

Yeah, have fitted one of those Kona Design hangers to the forks on my Specialized Tricross - helps with fork-judder under braking.
