Mavic Aksium vs Halo Aerorage 700c road wheels

Post by u0308863 »

Does anyone have any experience with the Halo Aerorage 700c road wheels? I really like the white ones. Having a 20 year old road bike, I think they would look really nice as they don't look like modern road wheels. However, many people have told me that the Mavic Aksium ones are very good wheels (I just don't think they would look as good on my bike). So now I am in two minds and would be grateful for getting some feedback from others.

No experience of the Halo's but I have a pair of Aksiums and they are rubbish. The rear snapped a spoke after less than 2 months, leaving me stranded 20 miles from home, as the wheel wouldn't go round (touching the frame both side due to the severe buckle). I've never bothered to have it repaired as i need wheels that are reliable and don't leave you stranded miles from home. I'm still using the front, but it flexes terribly when you get out of the saddle and some of the so called "aero" bladed spokes have twisted around, so that the flat side is facing forward. I wouldn't have another pair if you gave them to me and at £150 a pair, you can get a reasonable quality pair of handbuilts (Tiagra on Rigida Chrina) from Spa cycles, for less money.

If you really want cheaper "factory" wheels, then I'd recommend Fulcrum Racing 7's or Campag Khamsins. Both have assymetric spoking on the rear wheel, with twice as many spokes on the drive side as the non-drive side. I've had a pair of Racing 7's for about 4 years and have had no trouble with them at all.

+1 on the Fulcrum 7's. I had a pair for a while.. great wheel.. tough.. reliable.. sold them to a friend who's still riding them.. they have a HUGE number of km's on them now.. and have never given a hint of trouble...
