Safeman cable locks
Safeman cable locks
I have only been a CTC member for a few months so i don't know much about cycle goods that are advertised next to articles in the magazine. On page 39 of the April/May magazine i noticed a Safeman Cable Lock advert. Can anyone tell me whether CTC test each of these items before recommending them. Or has anyone here got one and can tell me if the Safeman is worth getting? I would only use it if i went on longer rides. My shackle lock weighs 1.3kg, so at 120g the Safeman would reduce the bike weight considerably! Thanks. Ian
Re:Safeman cable locks
Can't comment on selection criteria for inclusion in article mentioned, but seems reasonable to show both the heavy shackle lock and the lighter alternative alongside the article. The choice is yours. I have just bought the Safeman, after losing a small combination lock that I regarded only as a token anti-theft device for day-rides. The 120 Gm Safeman compares with 140 Gms for longer combi lock, and 180 Gms for a thicker cable lock. My old combi lock was lighter than any of these.
If you want real security, then you will need to carry a heavy duty lock; the Safeman is more of a deterrant for the opportunist thief. The cable is thinner than most cable locks, and my inexpert guess is that the lock mechanism is unlikely to compare with the shackle lock. Despite that, I will be using the Safeman on my dayrides until I can find a lighter alternative.
Incidentally my local bike shop could not source the Safeman from their suppliers when I put in my order some months back, so I tried the internet. A caravan accessory supplier was somewhat cheaper, including P&P, than the price mentioned in "Cycle".

Re:Safeman cable locks
The selection criteria are simply that the author of the piece (in this case Patrick Field) thinks this is a useful product. Or sometimes it is left to the editor (Dan Joyce) and/or myself (Chris Juden), to suggest a few bits and pieces that are typical of the general sort of thing the author is suggesting you need for the job. I cannot speak for anyone else, but in my case the judgement of what to recommend is honed upon 21 years experience answering letters, phonecalls and emails from you, the members.
And I can tell you, nothing concentrates the mind more wonderfully than the certainty that whenever I (or anyone else for that matter!) recommends a lemon in the pages of our magazine, then it is me who will have to answer all the letters, phonecalls and emails of complaint!

Beat me to that one! Bought one for £4.99 along with rather a lot of shirts and shorts.
Re:Safeman cable locks
Trouble is, the wife doesn't trust them - they're too cheap !
I asked if she's trust the if they were £15 ?
She asked what I'd rather eat - a tin of unbranded beans @ 5p, or Heinz @ 35p ?
Erm, OK !?

Re:Safeman cable locks
the safeman locks and other cycling gear that was on sale at lidl is now on sale on e-bay at a handsome profit for the seller. It is still cheaper than the cycle shops though.
Re:Safeman cable locks
Lidl Stores have recently had a promotion with safeman locks, but they looked a bit flimsy to me. Ideal for the occasion when you are just popping into a shop or so, but for long term parking no go.
Re:Safeman cable locks
These locks are excellent for locking your panniers to your bike whilst you pop in a shop. An opputunist thief will be put off by these.A proffesional will nick them and your bike no matter what you lock them with.
