Raleigh Winner

Post by lackofgrip »

Just got this old Raleigh Winner 10 spd given to me
Image
Paintwork is immaculate and everything is original

Been stored in my dad's mate's shed for years

the wheels need truing but apart from that I cant see anything else apart from a little lube on the dry chain

There's a couple of things I want to know

1. Can I put 700 x 23 tyres on as the current tyres are 700 x 286?? Or would I be better off with new wheels?

2. Can I change the brake and gear levers for an integrated option without changing the front and rear mech or do I need to change the whole lot??

Yes, if they are 700C. Exactly what does it say on the tyres? 700x28C?

There is no STI option for 10 speed AFAIK. You'd potentially be looking at the considerable expense of changing the whole drivetrain to get that functionality. Others may know different, but I expect it wouldn't be cost-effective to move away from downtube shifters.

Thanks for your reply

The tyres are

28-622 700 x 28C

I think I'm just going to go for aero brake levers to hide the cables like these

before you spend any money on it,
See how it rides (its huge)
Make sure the following are not corroded solid; spoke nipples...BB cups,,, stem .... seatpost
700x23 tyres may be too narrow for the rims, although those 700x28 look very narrow to me, possibly from when tyre sizes were even more random than now
The grease will be dried out, strip and grease everything.

Swap the DT levers for Kelly Take-offs - a lot of people seem very pleased with them.

I've checked everything on the bike. There's no rust or damage. The frame also looks straight.

Job's I'm going to do

1. Wheels trued and straightened

2. Fit aero brake levers to hide cables (suggestions for good one's please)

3. Wire-wool all the chrome to remove surface blemishes

4. Grease crank/bottom bracket and oil chain

5. Take it for a spin

Any other suggestions welcome

Unless you are at least 6' 2" I'd make that task number 1.

That's a shame. I was hoping you were 5' 8" and minded to sell it me as a fixie project.

+1 for Kelly Take Offs, i've got them on my Surly LHT with Shimano DuraAce downtube shifters. I wouldn't use anything else, way better than STI's in my opinion and definitely more reliable.

Don't end up spending more than it's worth, it's ok if you know that before proceeding but quite often people buy old bikes and think "a few quid spent and I'll have a reasonable bike" and before they've finished they've spent £200 on it.

IMO old bikes are good if you've got a big extensive box of bits to rely on and can do all the work yourself, then they do end up as good VFM.

If your going to sand - buff any old chrome work it will only start rusting as soon
as its wet or damp ! you can either polish up the chrome to a point it looks nice
and apply a couple of layers of clear acrylic lacquer to stop it rusting again or apply
a layer of WD40, though the oil will attract dust.

Don't forget that anything you want to spray has got to be dust free.
