Numb toes!!

Post by Kevin »

I have recently bought a new bike and have been traing for Lands End to John O'Groats.

After about 30Km I find that my toes are going numb and this does (obviously!) get quite painful. As soon as I get off of the bike for 5 minutes they are fine again.

I have tried new shoes but the problem has not gone away. Has anyone had this problem before and if so - help!!!

Hi, I have seen Specialised cycling shoes for sale with a special insole that they claim spreads the pressure away from a nerve in the sole of the foot to prevent numbness - I haven't tried them.
Good luck

Hi Kevin

Are you pedalling with the ball of your foot? If your foot is too far back on the pedal (spd, flat or whatever) you will be peadalling with your toes which is inefficient as well as painfull. Try bringing your foot forward slightly and see what happens.

I used to get numb toes wearing my bike shoes. Now I just wear a pair of old sneakers and the problem has vanished. Good luck.

Went for a ride yesterday and started getting numb toes. I put the reason down to the fact that I wasn't using my usual bike shoes and that as a result my foot/pedal interface was different.

I normally use running shoes to cycle in, but yesterday I used some badminton ones instead (they're a bit lighter).
However, it appears that these flex and compress differently than others. The badmionton shoes also have a thinner sole which may also affect things.

Also, I did find that waggling my toes around helped....
