Odd shaped touring bars

Post by breakwellmz »

This evening i came across some old press cuttings featuring a friend of mine on his touring bike.He had a pair of handlebars the shape of which i had not seen before or since, including searching the internet extensively.

I would love to find out what they were.

Image the combination of this shape of bar(This being the view from the saddle) and a pair of shallow drop bars.

Morning.

An exaggerated version of those, with probably a 4" height difference between the horizontal portion of the stem and the forward top bar section, such that the last(Rearward facing horizontal)portion of the bars is at the level of the top of the stem.

Is that clear? :?

The bars Brucey illustrates look interesting particularly for me in the 46 cm version. Where are they available and what is the diameter for the stem fixing?

A picture paints a thousand words,hopefully.

BTW i think Bruceys image is probably(Originaly)from the 1950s.
You could try Googleing(?)`Randonneur handlebars`

those are the most extreme randonneur bars I have ever seen. I thought the 1950's ones I found a picture of were extreme before I saw those....

I reckon you could make some a bit like that by adding some bends to (say) a Midge bar.

I see they are fitted to a 'Revell' so are of 1980's vintage or earlier. I don't remember seeing bars like that for sale in the 1980s; I wonder if they were either already vintage, or made/modified specially?

Makes me want to break out the pipe bender, that does....

Chris had them already and transferred them over,i`m pretty sure that they were not`home made`.
There would be a fair bit of tube involved

We all had Maxicar hubs :D ,and Huret Duopar(?)rear mechs :(

Cheers.

The 'bars in the press cutting look like they're regular drops on some kind of stem extension :?
 Maybe something like this:- http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Acor-Double-B ... 1e76dda505
