XT rear mech cable adjuster puzzle

Post by Russell160 »

I currently have a Shimano Alivio rear mech on my hybrid. I saw a cheap used Deore XT rear mech for sale and bought it, to replace the Alivio which is quite sluggish/slow to change up compared to the XT I have on another MTB. ( I have fitted a new cable so I know it's not that).
However, I now realise the XT rear mech doesn't have a cable adjuster on the mech. New ones don't appear to have either:

On my MTB which has an XT mech I see the cable is adjusted at the handlebar changer. However, there is no apparent adjuster on the gear changer on this hybrid. So therefore it would appear I would have no way of making cable adjustment.

My questions are:
a)Is this omission of an adjuster a standard XT feature or is it just missing? If it is standard, any guesses as to why this is?? It seems really bizarre.
b)Am I basically stuffed in this situation and should not bother changing the mechs?
c)Is the only other option to upgrade the handlebar shifters (which I am reluctant to do) to ones with a cable adjuster?

(I see the LH shifters do have a cable adjustment at the trigger: presumably because there is no other adjuster for the front mech??)

Thanks in anticipation.

An in line adjuster should solve the problem.

they come like that now and are designed to be paired with shifters with a a barrel adjuster.

You can fix your problem with an inline barrel adjuster.

Great thanks. How do you fit the in line cable adjusters: remove cable outer and cut it and refit? ie can I use the existing cable? And where should it be fitted: near the trigger or near the mech?

if you can remove and refit the old cable then by all means re-use it. However you may find the end is frayed so that it won't thread back through. Trim the outer by the length of the adjuster, and fit the adjuster wherever it makes most sense. Somewhere in the run between the pod and the first cable stop is usually best. Mid-run isn't a bad idea because that way it won't rattle or strain a short length of outer at one end.

I had a similar query.

I picked-up a Jagwire inline adjuster @ Local Bike Shop for a couple of quid.

I think I will try to put it near the derailleur rather than up near the STI shifter. { I like to watch how the derailleur moves while I do the adjustment. }

If you put the adjuster up at the top you can adjust it while you are riding so that you can fine-adjust it for the real world situation, rather than the workstand version.

You can also buy a BB non-threaded adjuster to fit in your rear derailleur, I have recently fitted one for use with an XT rear derailleur & bar end shifters

Hi Graham

The adjusters that Reohn2 and I provided links to in your other thread push straight into the rear mech and work exactly like the built in adjuster on a regular rear mech.

There's a "B" missing - it's BBB.These are probably what Phil meant.

I got a Jagwire adjuster and put it directly on the mech.
There is your way. There is my way. But there is no "the way".

Same here but I think my was a Richley version. It just pushes into the end of the rear mech where the cable goes in.

Sorry guys, I was using my mobile phone and missed that extra 'B' - yes that's the one: works a treat!

PS: finished work now and on the home computer!
