Shimano road shifter + MTB 10 speed derailleur

Post by fatoldman »

I am having problems getting up some of the many hills around me and thought that I'd put a 11-36 cassette on my cyclocross bike. I swapped the existing Tiagra 4600 derailleur for a Shimano SLX M663 Shadow 10 speed Rear Mech SGS - Long Cage derailleur (because the Tiagra has a reach limit of 32T sprocket). However, I cannot get the gears working with the existing shifters (Shimano ST 4600 Tiagra, 10speed). Is this due to my mechanical incompetence - or is the shifter and rear derailleur combination incompatible?
If there was a pessimism competition, I probably wouldn't qualify.

10 speed MTB cable pull is different from all the others.
You should be OK with a 10 speed road shifter and a 9 speed MTB R. mech.

531colin - many thanks. I thought that the cable wasn't moving far enough and now I know why. So, I am an idiot for not checking before buying but I can live with that. Back to the drawing board (and piggy bank).

So will the 9 speed mech allow for 10 speed cassette, i.e. allow to change all 10 gears, or do you need a nine speed cassette?

there may be a "workaround".....it would be worth waiting for more replies, gears aren't really my "specialist subject"

I always regret answering questions about gears......
Rear mech. cable pull is the same for all (modern, Shimano) road and MTB except MTB 10 speed.
Therefore you can run road 10 speed shifter and any 10 speed cassette (road/MTB) with a 9 speed R. MTB mech.

I agree with Colin; the combination of road 10s shifters, 10s cassette and 9s MTB rear mech (all shimano) should work fine.

Thank you all. I am happy man now. I thought that I'd have to go back to my original set-up but I will install a 9sp mech and be able to climb those hills. Thanks again.

A Shimano 10 speed cassette, both Road and MTB have the same sprocket spacing (pitch).

Shimano have altered the pull on their 10 speed MTB shifters and 10 speed MTB derailleurs apparently to improve shifting when riding over rough terrain.
This has had the effect of not being able to cross-use 10 speed MTB equipment with Road 10 speed.

A get around is to use a 9 speed MTB derailleur with 10 speed STI if wanting to go to 34T/36T large sprockets.
Some of the newish 10 speed road dérailleurs are designed to reach a 30T sprockets now.

Still it is wise to check the Shimano tech' specification regarding the intended sizing.

EDIT - others posted while I was writing this.

I am running a 10 speed 11-36 cassette with 10 speed Dura-ace bar end shifters and a 9 speed SLX rear mech on my Moulton APB. It all works flawlessly :D

I am happy to be corrected, I thought the max on the new shifters was 30 teeth.

Very sorry, my mistake. (senior moment) .
You are correct the max' is 30T for the latest Tiargra & 105 rear derailleurs.

Post above corrected. Thankyou.

Ultegra and Sora still showing 28T & 27T respectively.

The latest 10-speed 105 mechs (5700 series) have a limit of 30T for the SS version, but the GS version will officially handle 32T.

Looks like this is answered but just by way of confirmation, I have Ultegra 6703 10 speed shifters, SRAM 10 speed cassette 12-32 and 11-32 depending on wheels, and a M771 XT MTB rear mech on my audax bike. As stated above, it all works fine. Don't be tempted to use an MTB front mech though. These do not work with road shifters.
