Specialized Sirrus pro 2012-hybrid bike – cable routing

Specialized Sirrus pro 2012-hybrid bike – cable routing

I obtained a replacement frame under warranty scheme.

I was given specialized Sirrus pro 2012-hybrid bike

This frame uses concealed cable for both the brake and the gears.

I was not supplies with any brake or gear cable ferules.

This was not a problem until I attempted to route the rear brake, the entry point is too small for a standard 5 mm ferule while the entry point is a size of a gear cable ferrule but of course, that is unsuitable for brakes. If you do not use a ferule result, the inner cable scraps on the inside of the frame.

I attempted to use a step down ferrule but that still did not work.

Help what are the correct ferrule do I need for this frame and were can I get them.

Phillip my Mercian has internal rear brake cable though the top tube but the whole cable inner and outer goes through and there is a conduit inside the tube so you dont have to go fishing for it.

There should be a removable plate so you can fish the cable out of the frame, this then acts as the ferrule to position the cable properly on reinstallation, you shouldn't need anything else.
Convention? what's that then?

Specialized Sirrus pro 2012-hybrid bike –Installation of concealed cable for
rear brake.

This cycle requires a non-continuous outer cable for the rear brake.

The entry port for the outer cable was too small for a ferrule to be used.

If the inner cable was passed, though the frame it caused the inner cable to
scrape on the internal part of the frames. This was irritating and
potential a source of inner brake cable failure.

Various solutions were investigated without success.

It was discovered that this bike does not use a ferrule for the entry point
for the rear brake, I found this surprising, and this may be a design fault.

It was suggested using the protrusion of
http://jagwire.com/products/v/lined_end_caps

I then tried this but it was not particularly suited, but then I had an
idea.

I then tried using the internal plastic liner of a v brake noddle.

I used this in the following sequencing on the cable
Brake level
Ferrule
Outer cable
Plastic line thread into the entry point with the flange seating inside the
hole of the entry point

EXIT POINT
Plastic line thread into the exit point with the flange seating inside the
hole of the exit point
Ferrule
Outer cable
Ferrule
Noddle

The inner cable is then thread though all of this.

Secure on the brake.

I sprayed silicone spray on all surfaces to reduce drag.

IT WORKS.

CONCLUSION

Do not buy a bike with concealed cables.
