Non 531 vintage bike.

Post by roger72 »

I have a raleigh rapide mid 1960,s bike which is built with raleighs own 18-20 gauge tubing which i believe weigh only about 3/4 lb more than 531 plain gauge tubes. It has chrome fancy lugs, 3/4 chrome front forks & wrapover seat stays,my question is, as it is not 531 tubing is it worth anything & is it worth a respray ?

tough question as a respray would take away all the bikes originality and character in my mind

does the bike have sentimental value to you ?

Economically, probably not, but I've had several older frames that I simply liked resprayed in order to get longer service from them.

I had an old non-531 frame once. Half chrome forks.
Got it resprayed and had my own name on the frame decals. Designed and made my own head badge.
Being in the Birmingham part of the world, Reynolds waterslides were widely available ‘under the counter’ and decent LBSs.
There is usually someone at the Redditch cycle jumble who has genuine Reynolds 531 waterslides.

Do it!
