16" wheels ina 14" frame ?

Post by CyberKnight »

Can it be done and will it work ?
Mini ck has viewtopic.php?f=10&t=57492 his back wheel and swmbo does not want to buy another bike as he has the next size up ready but its to big for him frame size wise .He can ride the bigger bike but cant stop without falling off due to the frame design stopping the saddle going any lower.
So can i put the wheels off the bigger bike in the smaller frame?

Hi,

Generally on a bike that fits you can't stop and remain in the saddle.
So stopping and starting involves dismounting and mounting always.
So saddle height is not the issue, step over height is the issue.

I would assume the bigger wheels simply wont fit the smaller bike,
clearance probably and brake pad position if not the former.

rgds, sreten.

The back wheel is probably fixable, enough to be rideable. Bent
wheels nearly always bend back, with suitably applied force.
e.g. A Taco'd wheel is a typical wheel out of shape but is
so easy to fix angled 45 degrees between a floor and a wall,
just push the taco'd wings back, they'll snap back into shape.

Depends entirely on the height of the bottom bracket if the riding position is set correctly. However, here we are talking about a child's bike and depending on its use then position may not be so important.

To answer the OP - as noted by sreten they may not fit at all. If they fit it may be necessary to change the brakes to reach the rim. Putting larger wheels in will raise the bottom bracket which means the rider may need to leave the saddle to be able to reach the ground with a foot.

It sound like an awful lot of fuss and may not work at all. It is probably easier to fit the lad to an old torture rack and stretch him a bit. Trouble is that's not allowed these days :P
