Front mech for 52/42/30 triple 8sp

Post by Norton »

Need a replacement braze-on front mech to suit 52/42/30 chainrings with 8 speed chain etc. The old mech was a Micrsoshift item - would prefer Shimano, Campag etc instead

From what I can see most modern Shimano triples are not designed for this configuration -recommendations as to what will work well gratefully received.

I'm using a Shimano Claris with a 48/38/28, which works well with 7 speed, so should be good if it is speced for a larger ring? - I think it is also available for braze on mount.

I've been using an Ultegra triple running off Campag levers with 52/38/26 variously with 8/9/10 speed set ups - same mech!

Whilst i prefer Campag i've found the Ultegra units to be very accomodating with extreme ranges.
Convention? what's that then?

I too am using a Claris 8 speed, FD-2403, was 48/38/28, now 48/38/24 with 8 speed. It works fine. I'm pretty sure it's designed for 50/40/30 8 speed so it should be fine with 52/42/30. It's available as a braze-on. Presumably braze-on ones give a little adjustment? I've never used one.

Many thanks, but in the light of previous problems when deviating even a little from Shimano triple front mech/chainring specs, I was looking for a front mech specified to work with a 52 outer ring, 22t difference overall and 10t difference between outer and middle before parting with my cash.

I guess this is not as common a spec as maybe it once was?

The Claris triple is 50, 39 and 30

I think its safe to go smaller outer ring but going bigger may be risky? My Dawes 1-Down has a 46-36-26 blue RSX chainset ( intended for 3x7) and uses the front deraileur for the later black final RSX ( intended for 3x8) which was outer 50 and works fine

from an old table the Ultegra, 105SC & RX100 was 52-42-30T so maybe hunt out a good used front deraileur from those systems

Many thanks for the advice, I suspect the Claris may not work well.

Sounds like a new old stock Shimano mech might be best.

Using a Campag Centaur medium cage with a Veloce 53/39/30 set up off 9spd Ergos. No issues Rear wheels are either 13-26 or 12-25 depending which one has been seeing the fairy most recently... Have run 12-27 custom cassette on it too using a Marchisio 27 without issue.
