What bike is this?

Post by laflammerouge »

Hello,

This is my new bike and I was wondering what model it is.
Image External link: https://billedeupload.dk/?v=PMg0o.jpg
I do know that it's from 1985 and under frame it says: MODELE VITUS DEPOSE
Any help would appreciated

Thanks

Vitus are best known for their bonded aluminium frames these days, but for many years they manufactured steel tubes, lugs, fittings etc and these were widely used, mostly on French made machines.

So the marks you have seen sound like they are what you would expect to find on a Vitus BB shell. If also built in Vitus tubing, it could be Vitus 888, or Vitus Super 983, for example. The best way of determining the true nature of the frame is to measure it carefully (French tubes are often funny sizes) and to weigh the frame and fork alone.

If it is a fully French frame it may also have French BB threads and headset threads, and a 22.0mm stem (cf 22.2 for standard frames with BSC threading). Commonplace brands include Gitane, Motobecane, Peugeot. Frame numbers will give more clues, no doubt. Yours looks like it is a 'sports tourer' rather than a full-on racer, because it has generous clearances and mudguard eyes.

cheers

Hi Brucey,

Thanks for the info :D
Here are the first letters of the frame number: WRM, (I'm pretty sure it's an M, not an N)
The last letter is an A confirming it's from 1985.
Btw, if I'm gonna measure the bike to help determine the model, you'll have to guide me

I'm not sure if you have picked up on this but that is just saying it's a registered design. It doesn't tell you anything about the model of bike, other than what Brucey has said about Vitus as a manufacturer.

I have no idea what bike it is, but you can have a nasty accident if the quill stem isn't inserted far enough into the forks. There should be a mark on it.

@531colin: Why do think that?

Most stems like that don't have much quill length (not as long as some made today). A minimum amount of the quill has the be inside the steerer for it to be safe. Looking at your picture, it is doubtful whether enough of the stem is inside the steerer. You really should remove the stem and see for yourself, lest the thing snap or dislodge from the steerer whilst you are in motion!
