Not at all recent, but many years ago our local paper ran a headline

FISH HORROR - 20 DEAD!

Was it a terrible incident of food poisoning at the local chip shop? Or a killer stingray in the brook?

No. When the annual funfair packed up and headed off, they had discarded the surplus goldfish 'prizes'. 20 bodies in plastic bags had been found in the field.

In the normally staid business section of today's Daily Telegraph:

Edible insects will be flying of the shelves, experts say

As you might guess, it's about plans to market the "likes of crickets, grasshoppers, buffalo worms and meal worms" as food for Europeans. One of the illustrations is of a stir-fry, largely consisting of bean shoots, but that's not made clear. There may be some wondering what they have eaten.

But are they not raising a valid point. Often when considering the future it is a case of "could" or "might". e.g. we currently undertaking the Venusification of Earth's climate, yet when we report progress we still have to use would like "could" because we cannot be completely sure because it is about something that has not yet happened (and who knows what might change before the project is complete).

And in this case I suspect it is a valid risk they are reporting (I suspect they are talking about Aedes albopictus - carries Yellow Fever, Dengue, Zilka and we have had it in the UK before. But if they reported "will return" there would rightly be a lot of complaints, so "could" would seem appropriate. However there are questions over identification (it's very similar to Culiseta annulata) so could be we've not found Tiger mosquitos in the UK yet. But eggs (of Aedes albopictus) have been found so ... who knows.
