Gar nostalgia corner

Post by Mick F »

Good old Gar.
I miss him .................. I think.

Here's a question for the forum.
How many of us can remember Gar?

For those of us of lesser standing within this august forum, perhaps a bit of background to this 'gar' person would not be amiss? With links to some sample posts - if any still exist?

I do recall the delightful person of many names (bimblywimblyfimbly amongst them), and many bannings, who held forth on Cycling+ forum in its heyday. He's still around, I believe, although I know not his present appellation (on the Guardian he's "Solomongursky" I think). I met him in person a couple of times - far more self-effacing in real life than in his online persona. Presumably not the same individual as "gar".

Beep, Beep! He was a man of opinions. We didn’t even do politics much then.

Beep Beep, I remember him too, but I wasn't involved with him or his posts.
Gar, OTOH, we crossed swords a few times.

Gar was actually named Gareth Howell.
Don't know where he is now. He was handicapped and rode a hand-cranked trike. Handling Harry was one of his monikers IIRC.
Google him and he's a racing driver now.

Be aware that his website URL is active again.

I think it unwise to name him here ( in case he decides to turn his attention back here ) . . . . Oh, mercy !

What I find extraordinary is that not only do people remember him but it's now at least ten years since the new version of the forum and he belongs to the years before that. I wonder if people predicted how long the forum would go on for, never mind with so many of the same participants (well, except Gar).

It amazes me too.

I think I'm correct in saying that this forum is the third generation?
Sort of Tom Baker Dr Who?

I've been on here since late "William Hartnell".

If this is the third generation then it's John Pertwee. Tom Baker was the fourth Doctor (third regeneration)

PS I'm not commenting on Gar / Handalling Harry / (whatever the other two aliases were, I mis-remember now) for fear of invoking him and facilitating his return

This is a situation like "Fight Club".

If you're unaware, then you're OUT and we cannot talk about it.

If you're in on it - you're IN and you are, by definition, mentally deranged.

PS. It was I who removed your previous post under the "thinly-veiled swearing" rule. It was quite obvious what the asterisks were meant to be replaced with.
No matter : if you really needed punishment I would tell you all about gar.

The first rule of gar club is that you don't talk about gar club?
