The two vehicles in the picture clarify which.

It is indeed the Southsea - Ryde hovercraft, but not from Hayling Island. That would have needed a very powerful zoom lens. As above, there are two vehicles in the picture, and the other one, while not as rare as a hovercraft, is still an unusual form of public transport.

I'm not that familiar with the area being form the far north. Are you in the IOW ferry?

It was taken from inside one of these -

- the ex-London Underground trains that that operate the IoW's railway, running on Ryde Pier between Ryde Pier Head and Ryde Esplanade stations. The wooden window frames, louvre windows and 'Keep feet off seats' stickers can be seen.

I was on one of these once. It is 40 years since I was on the IOW although I was briefly on Hayling last year where I have a relative.

Thanks so much for these photos. Good memories of a place in I enjoyed visiting but which I am unlikely to get to again.

Invicta Tourist wrote:Peetee, the photo was indeed taken on the Roger Penny Way. I'd cycled through Fordingbridge, picked up some lunch at the Co-Op, then headed through Godshill. Later I branched right where the road from Hale Purlieu joins. The photo was taken just past that point.

Smashing. Must remember to check out my first assumptions before dismissing them next time.
That exact location was the point where I had my one-and-only major mechanical mishap. My left crank started to come loose and I didn’t have anything to fix it so rode one-legged into Fordingbridge with my left leg tucked up behind me and the toe of my shoe propped up on the rear brake calliper. When I arrived in the town the only bike shop had a sign on the door saying that as of ‘such and such’ a date this shop would be closed on Wednesdays. Guess what day I arrived?
Ok, try this for size:

This one is more a test of mapwork skills. There are no prizes for recognising the hill as Glastonbury Tor - but from what location was the image taken?

No. At that time of year, with the trees in leaf, you can barely see the Tor from the Abbey grounds.
