That's interesting. I know halide, halogen etc, but I wonder if halen came via Greek or not...

According to https://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/halen#Welsh

"Etymology
From Middle Welsh halaen, halen, from Proto-Brythonic *haluɨn, from Proto-Celtic *salanos, from Proto-Indo-European *séh₂ls (“salt”). Cognate with Cornish holan, Breton holen, Irish salann, and more distantly also Latin sāl and English salt."

The h- in halen seems to have arisen separately from the Greek form rather than come to Welsh via Greek. I'll see if there's a known pattern of shifting.

Yes, there's cheeses ...... but there are hundreds all over UK, so that's easy.

Any ideas?

The same root also gives "salary" from when one could be paid in salt.
....
The Welsh Language!!!!
Tolkien, as a linguist was delighted to find it on his doorstep, it was stated somewhere.

......
I remember a programme I saw about people taking the same job in different countries.

The one I saw was a Thames ferry captain taking a job as a Bangladesh ferry boatman!!

He had to row folk across the frighteningly busy shipping port near Dhaka (if memory serves).
Anyway such a Bangladeshi boatman/ferryman (there's hundreds of them) takes his own cash as he works.
The London Captain did not speak the language of course, so the programme makers enlisted one of the hundreds of homeless children to help him out with getting the fares.
A young girl of perhaps 12.

I was struck by how similar the spoken numbers were to Welsh in the brief section dealing with the cash side of things.

(( as an aside the two formed a really close friendship and it was stated that he started to help her out of rough sleeping etc. Into some education etc. It was very heartwarming. Must be nearly 20 years ago though. Wonder what happened.))

Ps.
And edit to get back on track.
Bombay Duck.
(Already done perhaps)

Nice, but not Scotch - I've been drinking whisky nigh on 30 years now, and I just cannot get on with anything but produced in Scotland!
