Islabike touch up paint

Postby ratherbeintobago » 27 Feb 2020, 8:05pm

Anyone know where I can get the metallic pink paint in a touch-up stick?

One option would be to get it paint-matched, either via one of the apps available, or via a paint supplier who can then mix a pot for you. The metallic aspect might be an issue though. Another alternative would be to get something from Halfords which resembles the colour. Although not many cars tend to be metallic pink, so you might have to compromise a bit there. Finally, you could nip down to your local model shop and buy a couple of small tins of Humbrol and experiment with mixing the colour yourself.

No idea where mumsnet got the colour references from, but this is from the Islabikes website:

Do you supply touch up paint?
Due to strict COSHH regulations governing the sale and safe transport of substances we don’t have touch up paint available. It may be possible to find a colour match that’s close from a car accessory shop or a model shop – there isn’t an official colour reference number we can quote as our colours are not chosen from a UK recognised colour chart so you’d need to take the bike with you.

To achieve the unique paint finish on an Islabike a number of colour layers are used, including a lacquer. For that reason, it will not be possible to achieve a perfect match with the colour of your Islabike.

Very strange range statement from Islabikes considering Frog bikes supplies a touch up pot with all their bikes!?

Not sure, but it might just be that Frog use standard RAL codes, whereas Islabikes don't...

Possibly but they state COSHH regulations not that they don’t use standard RAL codes.
Any paint could be a health hazard!
Probably more to do with profit than H&S

No doubt profit is a consideration ;)

Although the Islabikes statement does say they don't use paint from a UK-recognised colour chart, so I'm guessing RAL would be implicit in that.

Whenever one of our club Islabikes got chipped or scratched (ie pretty much all the time) we just used to put a sticker over it..

Halford say they can’t mix it. Anyone any other thoughts?

As already mentioned upthread - either buy the closest match, or mix it yourself out of a couple of Humbrol model tins, or put a sticker over it. Or just leave it as it is, because kids' bikes do get scratched..

Use nail varnish, don't try wheeling the bike into your local branch of Boots for a colour match though!
