Having heard stories of rigidly attached sidecars falling over with the bike/tandem we found this trailer. The ball and socket connection meant it remained upright when the bike was laying down. Fortunately we never had to use this feature
I now look at this and wonder how I managed to use a fixed wheel, those were the days . . . . 59 years ago.

Could be, I remember using a 3 speed Sturmey with a derailleur on a tandem, looks as though it also went onto this bike as well.

If you look at the photo carefully, if I'm not mistaken, there's a sturmey shifter on the curve of the bars just below the right brake lever.
