New to e bikes needing advice

Post by Gordy23 »

I do 100 miles a week commute and a few 4 to 5 day bikepacking and touring trips a year averaging 50 miles a day fully loaded. Im looking for an e bike to make things a little easier . Ideally lightweight and a good range on minimal assist and able to fit bikepacking bags. Not looking for a fast full on heavy e bike. Any advice appreciated.

Woosh Faro worth a look. https://wooshbikes.co.uk/?faro, Light (not the lightest), reasonable price (most lightweight ones come at a considerable price premium), excellent customer service. And it's even in stock, which is quite a thing for e-bikes these days.

You would need the big battery version for those touring trips.

Personally I'm not keen on that Woosh bike, seems to have some low grade components like a DNP freewheel. Something I would actively avoid.

Can't help wondering if you are after light assistance if you wouldn't be better off with a Swytch kit. You can then choose the bike you want or use an existing bike.

The Fazua system is reputedly good for light bikes. The Boardman with Fazua https://www.halfords.com/bikes/electric ... 36102.html used to be around £2200, but has jumped quite a bit to £2700 (you may get Cycling UK or other discount off that); all the other Fazua bikes are quite a bit more. It assumes you will do a lot of the work; even so 50 miles might be too much for it unless flat.Never believe 'up to' figures.
p.s. correction. https://www.halfords.com/bikes/electric ... 33934.html is £2200.

(I haven't ridden one or got any personal experience of that ... not my kind of bike)

I agree that adding a kit to another bike could be a good option. I personally wouldn't go for the Swytch; it is rather overpriced even at its (normal) 50% off, and has very low capacity battery; it would be hard to get 50 miles even with their bigger battery. Again I'd suggest Woosh if you do think of a conversion; Yosepower also worth thinking about.

Cytronex might be worth looking at; again their kit is light, but expensive and low capacity. https://www.cytronex.com/shop/?p=1

If you do think of a conversion kit it will be worth looking at https://www.pedelecs.co.uk/forum/forums ... ussion.42/
and for a full bike https://www.pedelecs.co.uk/forum/forums ... -i-buy.40/

Thanks for the comprehensive answer. I first thought of going for a heavier big capacity battery bike for the miles but then thought about a lighter lower capacity battery bike which would be easier to pedal unassisted and need less battery capacity. I guess, being new to ebikes im not comfy with being dependant on a battery rather than my own legs. I will have a look at all tour great suggestiopns and hopefully decide which way to go.
