Second hand e bike

Post by Sgpeg2016 »

So I may have the opportunity for a second hand Orbea Gain.

Any tips on what to look for to check its ok?

Most likely problem is the battery. Especially if people say very low mileage, that often means the bike has been ignored for a period which can be very bad for battery life. You won't easily be able to verify that; it will show up as diminished range. Probably an expensive replacement if one is needed.

Try riding with all the different power settings, and those bikes should ride pretty well without power so check that too.

Otherwise, it's mostly the same as a regular bike, check if you are likely to issues with transmission, brakes, wheels, tyres etc.

One thing I would do with the Gain is to use the Ebikemotion app. You can pair with the bike under Settings and then also in Settings/Help and Support/Engineering mode see things like total mileage and battery cycles. Good luck!

The app is the place to start, I agree. But also check it's age (with respect to the battery life).
There's a battery cycles count to look for too.

And no harm in asking the owner first.

I've bought two secondhand. The first was only 6 months old, low use - it had done 130 miles intermittently in that time (see above).
I've had no battery problems.

The second was bought broken. That had some damage where the rear wheel had been in & out repeatedly and consequently the motor cable had some damage to it's outer sheath. Oddly that wasn't the problem with it, but it's worth having a look at the motor cable to make sure it not been accidentally abused.

The only other weakness I've found (being heavy) is that the wheel strength is so-so. Check for loose / missing spokes. They can easily be fixed, but you might want to knock £30-40 off if they're not right.

Apart from that, very nice bikes for the price.

Well done!
Just the same as mine - identical colour and all.

Looks pretty perfect to me - no damage or wear visible on that pic.

Its got the newer square charging rubber cover too, so it's not old.

Went for a ride today and it was fantastic. Did first few miles with no power and so surprised how easy it was to handle. Then put it to "green" for hill and then left on "green" for rest of ride. Gave me reassurance that "orange" and "red" level there when I need it.
