E BIKE PORTABLE POWER BANK

Post by sue.s »

Can you buy a portable power bank to charge an e- bike. In other words, charge the power bank from the mains then use it to charge the bike battery, Weight of power bank not relevant as it would be transported by car. Bike in question is a SPECIALIZED VADO SL 4.0,non-removable battery!

What's the energy capacity of the eBike battery?

And what fraction of full charge would be acceptable?

(Then we can have a look at lithium battery packs... and the car as an energy source... )

must admit to being intrigued by the reason for needing this.
Is it for touring?

Leisure battery and inverter, or even car battery and inverter, but beware flattening it.

Re Johnathon's query, found this in a review: https://www.edinburghbicycle.com/specia ... ctric-bike

Re: Jonathon's reply Operating voltage is 320Wh Motor peaks at 240W/35NM Operating voltage 48V
Hope that means something! Thanks for your help.

Hi, Sue.

That 320 W h is probably the energy storage of the bike's battery.

How full do you want to be able to charge it from the new source?

...

Is there any documentation on the battery or charger, especially if it allows DC charging?

(There will be solutions if it doesn't but they won't be so efficient).

An inverter is probably your best bet, but you need to be very careful. A typical car battery is 50Ah at 12v, or 600Wh. Your bike battery is 320Wh capacity, so (allowing for inefficiences) it will deplete your car battery by quite a bit more than half. If you charge it while driving, though, you should be OK.
I doubt you'll find a backup battery that costs a reasonable amount, even if one exists. Some e-bikes do offer one (ebikemotion types) but they cost over £500; you can buy a inverter for a tenth of that.

Hello guys, thank you all for your interest, I'll do some more reading of the technical 'stuff' and get back later. Perhaps getting the bike into the hotel room would be the answer! Cheers, Sue

Could you just remove the battery and take that in with you?

One of those new style car jumpstarters which double as a USB power bank might have enough capacity
But
You would need to find a charger for your ebike that accepts 12v. My wifes ebike has a charger that outputs 29v

You might as well just carry a spare battery, surely.

If your serious about it you want a leisure battery 110ah best which you should wire into the car with a large cable (think jump lead thickness) positive to positive with a vsr + fuse (voltage sensitive relay) in the cable run.

This is how camper vans do it.

The negative is secured to the body.

You can get kits of eBay, Amazon or any campervan converter.

Carry a spare battery, most cells don't like high current charging due to cell life/longevity. Typically ebike batteries only have 4 or 5 cells in parallel so 2 - 4a charge dependant on the cell spec is more then they can handle.
Most lion chargers for ebike charge at 2a max.

Ah! Always read the small print! No doubt why no one else thought of such a simple solution. I would personally only ever get a removable battery - my own circumstances as I keep the bike in a shed which gets cold. And easy to take indoors to charge as no external power. Others have a different take.

Expensive option: new electric car with battery-to-grid capability (not every electric car has this). Such a car can power a 240v/13A socket for other devices, and would be fine charging a bicycle battery.
Downside, they're £35K or more, and a waiting list for quite a few types.
