AKEZ Sold By Amazon?

Post by NATURAL ANKLING »

Hi,
Just helped someone out with a puncture on their electric bike.
I didn't have the battery on the bike so I couldn't really tell what the battery was.
Anyway it's got a throttle and an LCD readout.
bike was atrocious really but that's another story.
I was just thinking oh it's got a throttle?
The only info I can find is a 350 W job, Using the description on the bike and a picture
So if it's got a throttle is it not a UK legal one?
I realised I should've looked at the battery, But it is there a way to define the power of this bike with the info I supply.
I've not dug very far but that is all I can find at the moment that resembles the bike.
He only bought it a few days ago, but I can't find anything on Amazon to suit.

Hi,
I have had another look.

I don't know anything about electric bikes but a throttle means what?
Just like a motorcycle throttle you twist it

Sounds too powerful and not compliant for UK road use

Hi,
Due to my total experience with electric bikes, it wasn't till I got home and started thinking about it, but I realised that an assisted bike wouldn't have a throttle with it.
When I was talking to the owner (A neighbour) about the saddle height which seemed incredibly low, they said that it goes uphill okay and also they've got to 30 km an hour on it too.

They said also that they hadn't changed out off the large cog on the front.
I live on top of the hill which means that in any direction you have to go down and it's pretty steep coming up too.
I see quite a few electric bikes and bikes going up and down my road obvious when you see them whether they're electric or not by the speed they're normally doing up and down the road.
I'm not sure I have the heart to tell him that bike is probably illegal on UK roads.

I suppose this is pretty usual for anybody who's been running an electric bike for some time, I mean it's no surprise is it.
That you can buy a bike and have it delivered quite easily with the sole intention of you riding on the road.

Sounds like an illegal "powered transporter" what's better a wake up call, find reason to return it as broken for a refund - off road use only or court, points and loss of driving licence?
It's an unregistered moped and uninsured.

Hi,
It came in a box and he said put on front wheel, pedals, saddle? IIRC.

Here's my take -

"AKEZ 004 Pedalec 02 06 21

Repair rear puncture-
Disconnect rear wheel motor cable, Undo rear axle nuts and remove wheel.
Remove tyre and remove burrs on rim. & refit tyre and new tube.
Assemble wheel back on bike and add cable ties motor cable to frame.
Refit rear gear derailleur.
Reassemble rear brake arm to disc calliper, remove excess brake cable, and adjust rear brake."

04 06 21 add to note- assemble rear brake calliper.
He removed rear brake calliper to attempting to remove rear wheel.

"Refit front axle skewer in correct order.
Adjust front brake, remove excess cable length.
Drop front gear derailleur to correct 1mm clearance (5mm),
Fit cable between body and clamp, was under cable clamp screw, adjust hi-lo stop screws.
Remove rear derailleur, tweak bent derailleur hanger, and refit rear derailleur."

The f/derailleur was fitted but 5mm off chainwheel, but stop screws were out of the box with no adjustment.
Cable was under clamp screw head and I assume this was also out of the box?
Rear derailleur hanger, part of frame was bent in, no idea whether this was out of box or user abuse?

"Adjust gears.
Tighten lock nut for folding frame clamp on toggle clamp.
Secure front control panel to handle bars with tape to prevent moving.
Throttle loose, tighten grub screw to handle bars.
Road test showed front brake calliper locking on!
Dismantle front disc calliper, clean and re-grease.
Road test all fine."

04 06 21 add to note, add threadlock to calliper securing bolts.
Both callipers were badly adjusted, i.e. Has 360 degree cup and cone washers for pad to disc alignment.
No Thread Lock on securing bolts! Throttle was totally loose on handle bar!?

"Recommend-
Saddle pillar bolt clamp a bit ineffective, replace with another.
Replace saddle pillar with a longer one, better ergonomics."

Saddle pillar within 3 " of clamp, I am same height and struggled to pedal it with any comfort, "he said goes up hills ok" that should of sent off alarm bells as to its self propelled, no doubt he did not use the pedals and thinks that its just twist and go?
"Replace front axle skewer with an internal cam type, existing external clamp is poor choice, safety recommendation.
Add rear derailleur and motor cable guard.
I will look out rear guard and longer saddle pillar plus front internal skewer, I probably have all parts.
Recommend another road test with battery, to check good brake performance.

IMPORTANT F.Y.I. -
It did not dawn on me till I got home and started to think about the throttle.
If the bike moves under own steam (power) without turning pedals then the bike is not a restricted electric bicycle!
Therefore you might run into problems if you have a spill with another person / other road user.
UK law says only 250 W motor with speed restriction to 15.5 mph with motor assistance.
Other than that it’s then classed as a vehicle.

Total work £ 25 (3 hrs minimum)
Paid £20...£5 to owing.
Thanks."

Thats cheap for the work init :)

P.S. Mother dropped up another £20 in an envelope......I will see him again later on............

P.P.S. The electric kit might cost £500 but the rest of bike really is as poor as it gets on quality, safety out the box is questionable!
I am estimating £ 650-750?
